“23 months ago, I thought every chance I had of standing here one day had been robbed from me. But because of my unwillingness to listen to medical professionals, and my desire to live my best life, I’m here. This was one of the most challenging days, not only physically, but mostly mentally. We woke up to freezing wind at 5am Saturday morning. We had been hearing the diehard day hikers moving past our tent since 3am, making their ascent. Our tent was being pelted with gravel by 40-50 mph gusts. We managed to cook some breakfast in the vestibule of our tent, and put on soooooo many layers to head out. Our group started with 11 hikers. 2 went at it very early, and we passed them on our way out. They made the decision to turn back due to high winds and freezing temps. We passed at least 50 hikers that morning who had all turned back for the same reason. It wasn’t until we were 2/3 of the way up the 99 switchbacks that we encountered a super fit looking guy who claimed that he had summited 7 times, and that this was his first failed attempt. This was a huge mental breaking point for me. I was 99.9% sure, we were not going to make it, with a little over 3 miles left to the summit, those 3 being the most grueling. Not to mention, the remaining 7 miles back. I was ready to quit before we made it to Trailcrest, of course I didn’t say it outloud. We made it to Trailcrest, and surprisingly saw clear skies on the Sequoia side of the mtns. Still very windy, but Mr. C was my rock. He must have known the struggle going on in my head, because he gave me a pep talk, about not coming this far just to quit, when the end was so close. Knowing he wanted to do this as much as I did made me keep going. I wasn’t going to give up, and ruin it for him. We kept going. Super high winds across the windows, through some glacial snow, and finally got sight of a tiny little sliver of that hut at the summit. It was the most satisfying feeling. We earned every bit of this peak! The only 3 of our group to summit. Today I’m feeling my age. Wind burnt faces, sore knees, and back, but happy…”
